The U.S. Food & Drug Administration recently announced that women with breast implants may have an increased risk of developing anaplastic large cell lymphoma, a rare type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
The FDA has received 359 medical device reports of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), and at least nine women have died as a result.
Most patients were diagnosed when they sought medical treatment for implant-related symptoms such as pain, lumps, swelling, or asymmetry. These symptoms were due to hardening of breast area around the implant, collection of fluid (seroma), or masses surrounding the breast implant. The ALCL diagnosis was made after examination of the fluid and capsule surrounding the breast implant.
